Introduction

On the evening of July 7, 2010, a mysterious object appeared in the skies above Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport, causing one of the most unusual aviation disruptions in modern Chinese history.

The event, now widely known as the Hangzhou Xiaoshan Airport UFO incident, forced authorities to temporarily close the airport and divert multiple flights while investigators tried to determine what had appeared in the sky.

The unexplained sighting quickly spread across Chinese media and the internet, sparking worldwide debate about unidentified flying objects.

The Night the Airport Shut Down

At approximately 8:30 PM, airport staff reportedly noticed a bright unidentified object in the sky near the airport. Shortly afterward, air traffic controllers decided to suspend operations for safety reasons.

The airport was closed from 8:45 PM until about 9:41 PM, while officials attempted to identify the object.

During that time:

  • Nearly 20 flights were diverted to nearby airports

  • Several departures were delayed for hours

  • Around 2,000 passengers were affected by the disruption

Incoming aircraft were redirected to other cities such as Ningbo and Wuxi, while ground staff searched the skies for the mysterious object.

Witness Reports

Many witnesses described seeing a strange light moving across the sky above Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province.

Descriptions of the object varied:

  • Some said it looked like a bright white streak with a glowing tail

  • Others described a twinkling yellow light moving quickly

  • A few claimed the object hovered briefly before disappearing

One resident reported seeing a beam-like light passing overhead and quickly disappearing into the night sky.

Because of these reports, local media quickly labeled the object a “UFO.”

Investigation and Possible Explanations

Chinese aviation authorities and scientists launched an investigation soon after the incident. However, the results were inconclusive.

Several possible explanations were proposed:

1. A High-Altitude Aircraft
Some astronomers suggested the object could have been sunlight reflecting off an aircraft flying at very high altitude.

2. Military Activity
Another theory suggested a military test flight or experimental aircraft might have been responsible.

3. Optical or Atmospheric Phenomenon
Some experts believed unusual atmospheric conditions could have caused light reflections or visual distortions.

Despite these explanations, officials confirmed there was no evidence linking the object to extraterrestrial activity.

Media Sensation and Internet Mystery

The incident quickly became a viral story online. Photos and videos claiming to show the UFO spread rapidly across Chinese websites and international news outlets.

However, investigators later found that many widely circulated images were unrelated or misidentified photographs, taken in other locations or created by long-exposure camera effects.

Even today, debate continues about which images were genuine.

Legacy of the Incident

The Hangzhou Xiaoshan Airport UFO incident remains one of the most famous UFO events in China.

What made the case unusual was that:

  • The sighting disrupted a major international airport

  • Thousands of passengers experienced delays

  • The event was widely reported by official Chinese media

Although no definitive explanation has been confirmed, the case is often cited by UFO researchers as one of the rare occasions when an unidentified aerial object directly affected commercial aviation.

More than a decade later, the mystery of what appeared over Hangzhou that night is still discussed by aviation experts, astronomers, and UFO enthusiasts around the world. 👽✈️
