‘Strange waves’ on weather app fuel UFO speculation.

Images of unusually large waves on a weather app sparked debate about the possibility of a UFO sighting, although it was later confirmed to be due to a software error.

Ventusky is an app that displays weather and meteorological data so people can track weather developments around the world. Last week, the app showed a wave over 24 meters high, covering an area of nearly 700,000 square kilometers , moving from Antarctica to the African coast, lasting 24 hours before disappearing, Fox News reported on April 14.

The video of the strange wave has been widely shared, sparking rumors of giant sea creatures or a spaceship underwater. “These are real encounters with ‘something’ viewers can see and record, but can’t identify,” wrote one YouTube user who reposted the video on social media.

Many commentators speculated that these could be creatures from science fiction or legends. Others linked the event to the possibility of a giant sea creature being awakened after the solar eclipse on April 8th.

However, some have pointed out that this could be a software error, as the strange imagery is moving across major shipping lanes without any reports of large waves in the area from seafarers.

In response to widespread rumors, Ventusky confirmed on April 12th: “Despite numerous reports of UFOs or Atlantians from the ocean, the image of high waves near Africa was a display error. Our provider, the German Meteorological Institute, has resolved the issue, and the weather forecast remains stable.”

The company stated that the weather app collects a vast amount of data from ships and buoys across the ocean, therefore errors are possible given such a large database.

However, speculation continued despite Ventusky’s verification. On April 14, the company had to post another message on social media platform X to reaffirm its position. “Many people still don’t believe the African tsunami was just an error and instead believe UFO theories… What can we do as a visualization platform?”, according to Ventusky.
