The Kumburgaz UFO Incident (2007–2009)

The Kumburgaz UFO Incident (2007–2009): Turkey’s Most Controversial UFO Footage

Introduction

Between 2007 and 2009, a series of mysterious UFO sightings were recorded over the coastal town of Kumburgaz, along the shores of the Sea of Marmara.

The event—now known as the Kumburgaz UFO Incident—became one of the most debated UFO cases in the world after unusually clear videos appeared to show metallic craft hovering over the sea. The footage attracted international attention because it was recorded repeatedly over several years and analyzed by investigators and scientific organizations.

The Man Who Recorded the Videos

The footage was captured by a night security guard named Murat Yalçın Yalman.

Working near the coast, Yalman began filming unusual lights and objects appearing above the sea during his night shifts. Using a Canon Mini-DV camera with a powerful zoom lens, he recorded more than 20 separate videos over several years.

Most of the recordings occurred between midnight and dawn, when the objects appeared hovering silently over the water.

Description of the Objects

In the videos, the unidentified objects appear as disc-shaped or oval metallic craft with bright glowing edges.

Witnesses and researchers noted several unusual features:

  • The objects hovered motionless above the sea

  • Some clips show bright lights moving around the craft

  • The shapes sometimes appeared semi-circular or dome-like

  • In some zoomed images, observers claimed to see figures or silhouettes inside the craft

Because of the camera’s strong optical zoom, some frames appear to show a cockpit-like structure on the front of the object.

These images led some UFO enthusiasts to claim the footage captured actual occupants inside the craft, although this interpretation remains highly controversial.

Multiple Sightings Over Three Years

One of the most unusual aspects of the case is that the sightings did not happen only once.

According to investigators, the UFOs were filmed repeatedly across three consecutive years:

  • 2007: First recorded appearances over the Sea of Marmara

  • 2008: The most active period, with sightings on several nights in June

  • 2009: Final sightings before the phenomenon disappeared

The objects often appeared in the same area of sky, suggesting a recurring pattern of activity.

Several residents and tourists in the area also reported seeing similar lights in the sky.

Scientific Analysis and Investigation

The videos were analyzed by researchers associated with the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey, as well as international UFO investigators.

Some reports claimed that the footage showed no signs of digital manipulation or CGI, meaning the object recorded was physically present in the scene.

However, investigators also emphasized that “unidentified” does not necessarily mean extraterrestrial.

Skeptical Explanations

Despite the excitement surrounding the footage, skeptics have proposed several alternative explanations.

Some researchers believe the object might be:

  • A reflection of a distant ship on the sea

  • A small object close to the camera appearing larger due to zoom

  • An optical illusion similar to the Pepper’s Ghost effect

These theories suggest the UFO appearance may have been created by reflections or camera artifacts rather than a real craft.

Why the Case Remains Famous

The Kumburgaz incident is still discussed in UFO research because it includes several unusual elements:

  • Multiple years of sightings

  • More than 20 separate video recordings

  • Several witnesses in the same location

  • High-zoom footage showing unusual shapes

Because of these factors, the event is often cited as one of the clearest UFO recordings ever captured, although its true nature remains unresolved.

Conclusion

The Kumburgaz UFO Incident (2007–2009) remains one of the most intriguing UFO cases in modern history. While the footage captured over the Sea of Marmara appears unusually detailed compared to most UFO videos, experts continue to debate whether the objects represent an unknown aerial phenomenon, a misidentified object, or an optical illusion.

More than a decade later, the mystery of the lights over Kumburgaz is still unsolved.
