a bright red sports car left Earth… and never came back.

In 2018, something truly surreal happened: a bright red sports car left Earth… and never came back.
During the very first test flight of Falcon Heavy, Elon Musk chose an unusual test payload — his personal Tesla Roadster. Sitting in the driver’s seat was a mannequin wearing a SpaceX spacesuit, nicknamed Starman, while David Bowie’s song Space Oddity played on the car’s sound system.

The idea wasn’t just a stunt. Instead of launching a dull block of metal as a test payload, Musk wanted something memorable — something that would capture the imagination of millions. And it worked. The image of Starman floating above Earth with “Don’t Panic” on the dashboard instantly became one of the most iconic space images ever captured.
But where is Starman now?
Today, the Roadster is roughly 300 million kilometers (about 190 million miles) from Earth — so far away that even light takes around 17 minutes to travel that distance. After launch, the car entered an orbit around the Sun and now travels along an elongated path that crosses the orbit of Mars. In essence, it has become a tiny artificial asteroid, endlessly circling our star at tens of thousands of kilometers per hour.
However, space is slowly destroying it. Without an atmosphere or protective shielding, intense solar radiation is breaking down the paint, plastics, rubber, and fabrics. Tiny micrometeorites are likely chipping away at it as well. Over millions of years, the car will probably be reduced to scattered fragments of metal.
And if it somehow returned to Earth today?
It almost certainly wouldn’t work. The electronics, battery, and materials were never designed to survive the brutal conditions of deep space. The once-shiny Roadster would likely be faded, brittle, and heavily damaged.

Yet in a poetic way, Starman is still driving — endlessly cruising around the Sun as a quiet symbol of human curiosity, creativity, and the spirit of exploration.
Somewhere out there, beyond Earth and sometimes even beyond Mars, a red car is still drifting through the cosmos.
