There’s a Monster Headed Our Way That Makes 3I/ATLAS Look Like a Pebble

While headlines may frame it as a looming “planet killer,” the reality is far less alarming and far more scientifically fascinating. The massive Comet Bernardinelli–Bernstein, discovered by Pedro Bernardinelli and Gary Bernstein, is indeed the largest comet ever observed, originating from the distant Oort Cloud and measuring over 100 kilometers across.

Its early activity—releasing gas far beyond the usual distance where comets “wake up”—has challenged existing models of comet chemistry, likely due to volatile substances such as carbon monoxide that can sublimate in extreme cold. However, despite its enormous size and unusual behavior, it poses no threat to Earth, as its trajectory keeps it well beyond the orbit of Saturn at its closest approach. Rather than a harbinger of destruction, this so-called “monster” is better understood as a pristine relic from the early solar system, offering scientists a rare opportunity to study ancient material and refine our understanding of how planetary systems evolve.
