Nature’s Midnight Masterpiece: The 2013 Lunar Waterspout

On the night of July 8, 2013, a rare atmospheric spectacle unfolded near Tampa Bay. A massive nocturnal waterspout formed over the bay, illuminated not by sunlight but by the brilliant glow of a Supermoon, accompanied by frequent flashes of lightning.

While waterspouts are relatively common in Florida, capturing one clearly at night is extremely difficult because of limited lighting. On this particular night, however, the Moon was near perigee—its closest point to Earth—making it appear larger and brighter in the sky.

That extra brightness created natural backlighting, allowing the swirling structure of the vortex to stand out against the dark waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

For a brief moment, moonlight, lightning, and the raw power of the atmosphere combined to reveal a stunning and rarely seen display of nature after midnight.
