Public Health Alert: Lubbock Residents Urged to Avoid Contact with Sick or Dead Birds

The Lubbock Public Health Department has issued a formal advisory following the detection of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), commonly known as Bird Flu or H5N1, in wild birds within Lubbock and the surrounding areas.

While the risk to the general public remains low, the virus is highly contagious among avian populations and can, in rare cases, be transmitted to humans through close contact with infected birds.

Understanding the Risk

HPAI is a severe viral disease that is often fatal to domestic poultry and can cause significant illness or death in wild birds, including geese, grackles, and hawks. Human infection typically occurs when the virus gets into a person’s eyes, nose, or mouth, or is inhaled via droplets or dust.

Vital Safety Guidelines: Do’s and Don’ts

To protect yourself and your family, health officials recommend the following protocols:

  • Maintain Distance: Do not touch or handle wild birds under any circumstances. This includes birds that appear healthy, as well as those that are visibly sick or deceased.

  • Report Sightings: If you encounter a sick or dead bird on your property or in public spaces, do not attempt to move it yourself. Instead, contact Lubbock Animal Services via their official city channels to report the location for professional removal.

  • Use Protection: If accidental contact occurs or if you must handle a bird for disposal, always wear disposable gloves and a well-fitted mask.

  • Practice Hygiene: Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water immediately after any potential exposure or after spending time in areas where wild birds congregate.

Symptoms to Watch For

If you have had potential exposure to an infected bird and begin to develop flu-like symptoms—such as fever, cough, sore throat, or eye redness—contact your healthcare provider promptly. Early intervention is key to managing potential transmission.

Identifying a Sick Bird

Residents should be observant of wildlife showing unusual behavior. A bird suffering from HPAI may exhibit:

  1. Lack of coordination or “stumbling”

  2. Swelling around the head, neck, and eyes

  3. Purple discoloration of the wattles, combs, and legs

  4. Sudden death without clinical signs

A Community Effort

By following these simple guidelines, Lubbock residents can help contain the spread of the virus and protect our local ecosystems and domestic poultry industries. Stay informed, stay distant, and stay safe.
