“Woman Learned She Was Pregnant After ‘Giving Up’ — Then She and Her Twin Gave Birth on the Same Day
Rachel Schmidtberger and Lindsey Denny have shared major milestones their entire lives — but even they didn’t expect to give birth on the very same day.
The 37-year-old identical twins, who work together as dermatologists in Texas, welcomed their baby boys just 12 hours apart last week. Both deliveries took place on Tuesday, August 26, at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston.

The sisters have always been closely connected, from attending undergraduate studies to medical school together at the University of Texas. Still, the timing of their births came as a complete surprise.
Both women had been given the same due date — Monday, September 1. Schmidtberger was scheduled to be induced earlier in the week, while Denny planned to be induced two days later.
As Schmidtberger went into labor at the hospital as planned, Denny was at home taking care of her sister’s daughter — when her own water suddenly broke. The unexpected moment was even captured on a home camera.
Their doctor, Dr. Sharon Vila Wright, quickly adjusted her schedule so she could deliver both babies on the same day.
The newborn boys, Hayes and Owen, also share the same middle name — Michael — adding another special connection between them. Because their mothers are identical twins, the boys are genetically half-siblings as well, earning them the playful nickname “brother cousins.”

For Denny, the journey to motherhood had been especially emotional. After struggling with fertility issues, she discovered she was pregnant around Christmas — at a time when she had nearly given up hope.
The joy of the births was also tinged with sadness, as Schmidtberger’s mother-in-law had recently passed away due to complications from ALS.
Though initially surprised by the remarkable timing, their doctor noted that the sisters seemed to take it all in stride, embracing the moment as part of their unique twin bond.
