“I Beat 700,000-to-One Odds to Have Quads — It Left Us Terrified and Broke as Our Beautiful Babies Cost £200 a Week
Katalina Davies, 31, never imagined that trying for just one more baby would change her life so dramatically. She conceived quadruplets naturally — without IVF — beating odds estimated at 700,000 to one, in what is believed to be a unique case in the UK.
Katalina and her partner Matt Davies had been together since 2012. Both already had children from previous relationships — Faith, now 11, and Callum, now 10 — but they longed to have a child together.

Trying to conceive wasn’t easy. Month after month brought disappointment, with negative pregnancy tests and growing heartbreak. Doctors had told Katalina she likely had polycystic ovaries, making pregnancy more difficult. She was given a low dose of medication to help — but still, nothing seemed to work.
“I thought I’d never become a mum again,” she said. “Every month was another disappointment.”
Then, in 2014, everything changed. A pregnancy test finally showed two blue lines.
“I couldn’t believe it,” she recalled. “I was so happy.”
But her joy was mixed with fear. She experienced severe stomach pain and worried she might lose the baby. After blood tests showed unusual results, doctors asked her to come in immediately for a scan.
“I was lying there, terrified,” she said. “I thought it might be an ectopic pregnancy — that I could lose everything.”
What came next was beyond anything she could have imagined.
“The sonographer said, ‘I can see three sacs… possibly four,’” Katalina recalled. “I just burst into tears.”
A second doctor confirmed it — she was carrying four babies.
“It was such a shock,” she said. “I went home and cried. I was happy, but also terrified. Could I really cope with four?”
Doctors warned her about the risks and even offered the option of reducing the number of babies to improve safety. But Katalina refused.

“I couldn’t consider losing any of them,” she said. “They all deserved a chance.”
Her pregnancy was closely monitored, as naturally conceived quadruplets — especially from four separate eggs — are extremely rare. Despite early morning sickness, things progressed relatively smoothly until 30 weeks.
“My bump was enormous,” she said. “At 12 weeks I looked five or six months pregnant, and by 20 weeks I looked ready to give birth.”
She had to stop working as a hairdresser due to the physical strain. Every day was filled with worry — but also hope.
In early 2015, at 27 weeks pregnant, she was admitted to St Mary’s Hospital in Manchester and placed on bed rest to reduce the risk of early delivery.
The babies were originally due to be delivered at 32 weeks, but complications arose when Katalina developed pre-eclampsia. As a result, the quadruplets were delivered by C-section at 30 weeks in February 2015.
Sofia weighed 3 lb 11 oz, Amelia 3 lb 7 oz, Aston 3 lb 2 oz, and Roman 2 lb 13 oz.
“I was overwhelmed with relief when they were all born safely,” she said.
After a short hospital stay, the babies were allowed home — each already showing their own unique personalities. Sofia loves food and is calm, Aston is cheerful and always smiling, Roman may be the smallest but has the loudest voice, and Amelia quickly wins everyone’s heart.
Life with four babies, however, has been anything but easy.
“At one point, we were spending £200 a week just on essentials,” Katalina said. “We went through about 20 nappies a day, and each baby needed six bottles daily.”
Feeding time was especially challenging. “While I was feeding two, the other two would be crying,” she said. “I just couldn’t produce enough milk for all of them.”
Despite the chaos, Katalina says she wouldn’t change anything.
“It’s hard work, and honestly, it’s still scary sometimes,” she admitted. “You’re constantly thinking about their safety.”
Financially, the family has had to adjust, relying on careful budgeting and deals. But Matt’s dedication and hard work have helped support them through it all.
As the children grew, they became an even bigger part of the family’s special moments. When Katalina and Matt got married, the quadruplets — along with Faith and Callum — were part of the wedding party.
“It was so special having all our children there,” she said. “Not many brides can say they had quadruplets in their wedding party.”
Looking back, the couple agrees their family is now complete.
“We only wanted one more baby,” Katalina said. “We never imagined we’d have four at once — but we wouldn’t have it any other way.””
