“Mum of Five Under Five: “I Freaked Out When I Found Out I Was Having Triplets”
Holly Bassler, 33, from Pennsylvania, US, became a mother of five in just three years after giving birth to spontaneous triplets.
Holly was stunned when an eight-week scan in 2019 revealed three heartbeats, as multiples do not run in her family. Already the mother of Aaralyn, two, and Jessie, one, she admits she felt “terrified” at the news.

“Going to the ultrasound alone, I was in total shock when they said there were three sacs,” she recalls. “It was overwhelming, and I immediately started worrying about whether I could handle being the mum I always wanted to be with a one- and two-year-old at home.”
Holly and her husband, Mike, 32, an electrician, had hoped to have their children close in age so they could grow up together—but three babies at once was far from what they expected.
The triplets—Judah, Jamie, and Jack—were born via caesarean section at 34 weeks and three days on May 10, 2020. Holly describes the pregnancy as “wonderful,” with no sickness or major health issues, and all three babies developing perfectly.
Despite the joy, managing five children under five has been a challenge. Holly admits that balancing her time between each child can be difficult. “Our lives are very busy and chaotic. The constant demands and overstimulation are the hardest part,” she says.

She also acknowledges moments of mum guilt. “I feel bad that I can’t be in more than one place at a time. But seeing the kids grow together and watching Aaralyn and Jessie become more considerate, helpful, and sociable makes it all worth it.”
Reflecting on her journey, Holly says: “I worried about how it would work with five kids, but I remind myself how amazing it is that my body created three babies at once. It’s truly a miracle and a blessing.””
