USS Roosevelt UFO Encounters (2014–2015): When U.S. Navy Pilots Faced the Unknown

A Mystery Above the Atlantic Ocean

Between 2014 and 2015, pilots assigned to the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt reported a series of extraordinary encounters with unidentified flying objects — now officially referred to as Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP).

Unlike many earlier UFO stories, these incidents involved advanced military aircraft, multiple trained witnesses, radar confirmation, and infrared video recordings. The encounters would later become some of the most widely discussed and seriously investigated UFO cases in modern history.

Routine Training Turns Unusual

During pre-deployment exercises off the U.S. East Coast, Roosevelt pilots began detecting strange airborne objects appearing regularly in restricted military airspace.

According to pilot reports, the sightings occurred almost daily for months. Objects were tracked simultaneously by onboard radar, targeting systems, and visual observation — an unusual level of confirmation for UFO incidents.

Pilots described several unusual shapes, including:

  • Spheres and oval objects

  • A “cube inside a sphere” design

  • Craft with no visible wings or engines

  • Objects capable of extreme speed and sudden maneuvering

One aviator reportedly came close to colliding with an object during a training mission, raising serious aviation safety concerns.

The Famous Navy Videos: “Gimbal” and “GoFast”

Two encounters recorded on January 21, 2015, became especially famous after the U.S. Department of Defense confirmed and released the footage years later.

The “Gimbal” Video

Captured by an F/A-18 Super Hornet’s infrared targeting pod, the video shows a mysterious object flying above clouds while appearing to rotate mid-air.

Pilots can be heard reacting in disbelief, with one remarking that multiple unknown objects seemed to be present on their sensors.

Analysts later noted that the object showed:

  • No visible propulsion system

  • Stable flight despite strong winds

  • Sudden directional changes inconsistent with known aircraft

The “GoFast” Video

Recorded the same day, another infrared clip shows a small object racing just above the ocean surface at remarkable speed.

The pilots celebrated locking onto the target, expressing surprise at how quickly it moved without any visible exhaust or wings.

Technology vs. the Unknown

What made the Roosevelt encounters especially compelling was the technology involved. The aircraft used sophisticated radar and infrared targeting systems designed to identify advanced enemy aircraft.

Pilots reported that the objects:

  • Maintained hypersonic-like speeds

  • Hovered or accelerated instantly

  • Operated in all weather conditions

  • Showed no heat signatures typical of jet engines

Because multiple sensors detected the objects simultaneously, many witnesses argued the encounters could not easily be dismissed as camera errors or atmospheric effects.

Official Response and Pentagon Recognition

The Pentagon later acknowledged the authenticity of the Navy videos and classified the objects as UAP, marking a major shift in government transparency regarding UFO reports.

The repeated sightings contributed to:

  • New Navy reporting procedures for pilots

  • Increased safety protocols

  • The creation of official U.S. government UAP investigation programs

Despite investigations, no definitive explanation has been publicly confirmed.

Why the USS Roosevelt Encounters Matter

The Roosevelt incidents are often considered a turning point in UFO history because they moved the topic from fringe speculation into mainstream scientific and governmental discussion.

Key reasons include:

  • Highly trained military witnesses

  • Multiple independent sensor confirmations

  • Officially released military footage

  • Government acknowledgment of unexplained aerial objects

Rather than proving extraterrestrial technology, the encounters highlighted a different reality: modern military systems are still detecting phenomena that remain unexplained.

An Ongoing Mystery

Today, the USS Roosevelt UFO encounters remain unresolved. Scientists, defense analysts, and aviation experts continue debating whether the objects represented:

  • Advanced foreign technology

  • Unknown natural phenomena

  • Sensor misinterpretation

  • Or something entirely new

Whatever the answer may be, the events demonstrated that even in one of the world’s most technologically advanced environments — a U.S. Navy carrier strike group — the skies can still hold mysteries beyond current understanding.
