The Man Who Stepped Forward

The Man Who Stepped Forward
In a single, irreversible moment, everything changed. Faced with a split-second decision, Nick Lavery stepped directly into danger to shield a teammate. The burst tore through his right leg, shattering bone and severing a major artery. By all medical expectations, survival was unlikely. Yet somehow, he endured. The cost was devastating—his leg lost above the knee—but his will remained unbroken.

What followed was not just recovery, but an extraordinary fight to reclaim purpose. After more than 30 surgeries at Walter Reed, Lavery refused to accept the limits others placed on him. Through relentless rehabilitation, he rebuilt his strength from the ground up, ultimately passing one of the most demanding combat fitness assessments in the world. In 2015, he returned to Afghanistan alongside his Special Forces team, becoming the first above-the-knee amputee in history to go back into active combat.
Those who witnessed his resolve gave him a name: “Machine Fighter.” But his journey did not end there. He went on to achieve what no amputee had before—completing elite Special Forces training programs, including the Combat Diver Qualification Course, the Warrant Officer Technical and Tactical Certification, and the Special Operations Combatives Program Instructor Course.

Highly decorated for his service, Lavery’s honors include the Silver Star, multiple Purple Hearts, and Bronze Stars recognizing both valor and sacrifice. Today, he shares his story across the world, mentoring others and speaking on leadership, resilience, and the power of choice.
That day, he chose to step forward. He lost a part of himself—but proved, every day since, that what he stood for was far greater.
