A SECOND CHANCE AT LIFE: THE EXTRAORDINARY JOURNEY OF GUÐMUNDUR FELIX GRÉTARSSON
In a matter of seconds, everything changed. In 1998, Guðmundur Felix Grétarsson suffered a devastating accident while working as an electrician, receiving an 11,000-volt electric shock that resulted in the loss of both arms at the shoulders. What followed was not just years of physical adaptation, but a profound test of resilience, patience, and hope.

For more than two decades, he lived without arms, navigating daily life in ways most people could hardly imagine. Yet, his story did not end there. In Lyon, France, a team of pioneering surgeons prepared for a procedure never before attempted at such a scale—a full bilateral arm and shoulder transplant. After years of evaluation, training, and preparation, the groundbreaking surgery finally took place in January 2021. Lasting over 14 hours, it marked a historic milestone in modern medicine.

Recovery, however, was only the beginning of another long journey. Through relentless rehabilitation and determination, Guðmundur gradually regained movement, strength, and control. Simple actions, once thought impossible, became meaningful victories. Among them, one moment stood above all—being able to embrace his grandchildren for the first time in decades.
His journey is more than a medical achievement; it is a testament to human endurance and scientific progress. It shows that even after total loss, the boundaries of possibility can be redefined, offering not just survival, but the chance to truly live again.
