Girl Who Faced Online Abuse Over Her Appearance Dies Aged 10

A 10-year-old girl who bravely endured years of cruel online abuse because of her severe physical differences has sadly passed away.
Sophia Weaver, born with significant deformities affecting her face, hands, and feet, died on Thursday after becoming suddenly ill earlier in the week.
Her mother, Natalie Weaver — a passionate disability rights advocate from North Carolina — shared the heartbreaking news on social media. “Our sweet Sophia left this earth last night, having spent every day of her life surrounded by love and adoration,” she wrote. “Once we begin to heal from this heartbreak, we will continue helping others in her memory.”

Sophia lived with multiple complex conditions, including Type 1 diabetes and Rett syndrome, a rare neurological disorder. She communicated mainly through eye movements and soft sounds and required constant, round-the-clock care.
Her story gained national attention after Natalie began speaking out about her daughter’s condition and broader issues surrounding healthcare access for disabled children. While the advocacy brought support and awareness, it also exposed Sophia to vicious online harassment. In one particularly cruel incident, a social media user posted an offensive message using Sophia’s photo to argue in favor of aborting disabled children. After public outcry, the post was removed, and the platform issued an apology.

Despite the pain of the abuse, Sophia’s life and her mother’s advocacy touched many, even earning recognition from former President Barack Obama.
In the wake of her daughter’s passing, Natalie is calling on supporters to keep raising awareness and helping children with chronic illnesses and disabilities, so that Sophia’s legacy of courage and love continues to make a difference.
