Astronauts aboard the International Space Station recently captured something so rare and mysterious that it looks almost unreal.
High above a raging thunderstorm, a gigantic crimson flash suddenly burst upward into the upper atmosphere — a phenomenon known as a “red sprite.”

From the ground, we almost never see these events. They happen extremely high above the clouds and last only a few milliseconds. But from space, astronauts sometimes witness these breathtaking flashes that look like glowing red jellyfish floating above the storm.
These strange lights belong to a family of phenomena scientists call Transient Luminous Events — powerful electrical discharges triggered by intense lightning far below in the storm clouds. Some of them can reach up to 80 km above Earth, stretching toward the edge of space.
Imagine this scene:
Below you — violent thunderstorms.
Above them — the darkness of space.
And between the two… a silent red flash erupts like a cosmic lightning jellyfish.
For astronauts orbiting about 400 km above Earth, moments like this are a reminder that our planet is still full of mysteries waiting to be understood.

And perhaps the most incredible part?
Even after decades of research, scientists still don’t fully understand why sprites appear in some storms and not in others.
Earth continues to surprise us.
If this amazed you as much as it did the astronauts…
leave a in the comments and share it with someone who loves the wonders of our planet.
