ALL FIVE types of nucleic acid bases, the literal building blocks of LIFE ‘DNA and RNA’, have been found in samples collected from asteroid Ryugu.

A research team extracted and analyzed approximately 20 milligrams of organic matter from the samples brought back by Hayabusa2 from the asteroid Ryugu.

As a result, all five types of nucleic acid bases, which are the basis of DNA and RNA that carry the genetic information of life, were detected.

All five types of nucleic acid bases have also been detected in samples brought back by NASA probes from other asteroids in the solar system.

The research team suggests that the presence of five different nucleic acid bases on the two asteroids means that the substances that give rise to life are widely distributed throughout the solar system
