The 1964 Lonnie Zamora UFO Incident

The 1964 Lonnie Zamora UFO Incident

A Police Officer’s Encounter That Became One of America’s Most Credible UFO Cases

Socorro, New Mexico — April 24, 1964. What began as a routine police pursuit in the desert outside a small American town soon turned into one of the most famous UFO encounters in history. The event involved a respected police officer, physical evidence on the ground, and an official investigation by the United States Air Force.

The incident, now known as the Lonnie Zamora incident, remains one of the most puzzling cases studied by investigators and scientists.

A Routine Patrol Turns Strange

On the afternoon of April 24, 1964, Lonnie Zamora, a police officer in the small town of Socorro, was chasing a speeding car on the outskirts of town.

During the pursuit, Zamora heard a loud roaring sound and noticed a bright flame in the sky descending toward the desert. Thinking it might be a vehicle accident or an explosion at a nearby dynamite shack, he turned off the road to investigate.

What he encountered next would become a legendary UFO case.

A Mysterious Egg-Shaped Craft

As Zamora approached a small arroyo (dry desert ravine), he saw a shiny, egg-shaped object resting on the ground. The craft appeared metallic and smooth, roughly 4–5 meters long, and stood on four landing legs.

Near the object, he observed two small humanoid figures dressed in white coveralls. According to Zamora’s report, the beings appeared startled when they noticed him approaching.

Moments later, the figures quickly entered the craft.

Sudden Takeoff

Zamora reported hearing a loud roaring sound as a blue and orange flame shot downward from beneath the object. The craft then lifted off the ground, rising vertically before moving away rapidly over the desert.

As the object departed, it cleared a nearby shack and disappeared into the distance.

Shaken by what he had just witnessed, Zamora immediately called for backup on his police radio.

Physical Evidence at the Scene

When other officers arrived, they found unusual physical traces at the landing site:

  • Four deep impressions in the ground, consistent with landing legs

  • Burned and scorched vegetation beneath where the craft had hovered

  • Disturbed soil and marks suggesting intense heat or propulsion

These traces were photographed and examined by investigators.

Because of the credibility of the witness and the physical evidence, the case quickly attracted national attention.

Investigation by the U.S. Air Force

The incident was officially investigated under Project Blue Book, the United States Air Force program responsible for studying UFO sightings.

Investigators interviewed Zamora multiple times and examined the landing site in detail. They concluded that Zamora was a reliable and honest witness, and there was no evidence that he fabricated the story.

However, despite the investigation, officials could not determine what the object actually was.

The case was ultimately listed as “unidentified.”

Possible Explanations

Over the years, several theories have been proposed:

  • Experimental military craft being tested in the New Mexico desert

  • A hoax staged by students from nearby institutions

  • Misidentification of a lunar lander test vehicle or experimental rocket device

However, none of these explanations has been universally accepted.

Even skeptics acknowledge that the Zamora case is unusual because it involved both a trained observer and physical traces on the ground.

A Case That Still Raises Questions

More than sixty years later, the Lonnie Zamora incident remains one of the most famous UFO encounters ever reported in the United States.

Unlike many UFO sightings, it included:

  • A close-range observation by a trained police officer

  • Multiple witnesses arriving shortly afterward

  • Physical evidence at the landing site

  • An official military investigation

For UFO researchers, it stands as one of the most credible cases in the history of unidentified aerial phenomena.

Whether the object was secret technology, a misidentified experiment, or something still unexplained, the strange encounter in the desert outside Socorro continues to fascinate investigators and historians today. 👽
