When U.S. Navy Pilots Encountered the Mysterious “Tic-Tac” Craft

One of the most famous modern UFO encounters occurred during a U.S. Navy training exercise involving the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz and its strike group off the coast of Southern California.

Strange Radar Contacts
The incident began aboard the missile cruiser USS Princeton, which was part of the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group.
For several days prior to the encounter, radar systems detected unknown objects descending from extremely high altitudes — around 80,000 feet — to just above the ocean in seconds.
The objects would then hover or move erratically before disappearing from radar.

Fighter Jets Scramble
Two Boeing F/A‑18F Super Hornet fighter jets were dispatched from the aircraft carrier to intercept the unknown object.
One of the pilots was David Fravor, a highly experienced commander.
When the jets reached the coordinates provided by radar operators, they noticed something unusual on the surface of the ocean.
The water appeared to be churning violently, as if something large had just submerged beneath it.

Pilots described the object as smooth, white, and shaped like a Tic-Tac mint, roughly 40 feet long with no wings, rotors, or visible propulsion system.

Suddenly, the craft accelerated.
According to the pilots, it shot away at incredible speed, disappearing in seconds.
Moments later, radar operators reported that the object had reappeared 60 miles away near the aircraft’s designated combat air patrol point — a location it could not have reached so quickly using known aviation technology.
The FLIR Video
Shortly after the initial encounter, another jet equipped with advanced targeting sensors captured infrared footage of a similar object.
The recording later became known as the FLIR1 video.
The footage shows a small object moving rapidly while pilots express surprise at its unusual behavior.
In 2017, the video was publicly released by The New York Times Company and later officially confirmed by the United States Department of Defense as authentic Navy footage.
Government Acknowledgment
The Nimitz encounter gained worldwide attention after former Pentagon program director Luis Elizondo discussed the case publicly.
The event was part of investigations conducted under the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program.
In 2020, the U.S. Navy officially stated that the objects seen in the released videos remain “unidentified aerial phenomena.”
