The Gorman Dogfight (1948)

The Gorman Dogfight (1948)
When a U.S. Pilot Chased a Mysterious Light Over North Dakota
Fargo, North Dakota — October 1, 1948.
One of the earliest and most dramatic UFO encounters in U.S. aviation history occurred on a clear autumn night when a young fighter pilot reported engaging in an aerial “dogfight” with a mysterious glowing object.
The event, later known as the Gorman Dogfight, involved George F. Gorman, a pilot with the North Dakota Air National Guard, who claimed he chased a strange light performing incredible maneuvers in the night sky.
A Routine Flight Turns Strange
On the evening of October 1, 1948, Lieutenant George F. Gorman was flying a North American P-51 Mustang during a night training mission over Fargo, North Dakota.
Below him at Hector International Airport, a small Piper Cub aircraft was also flying in the area. Several people on the ground, including airport personnel, soon noticed a bright white light moving erratically through the sky.
Curious, Gorman decided to investigate.
The Aerial Chase
As Gorman approached the object, he realized it was not behaving like a conventional aircraft.
According to his report, the light:
-
Accelerated rapidly
-
Performed sharp turns and sudden climbs
-
Appeared to intentionally maneuver around his fighter jet
Gorman later told investigators that the object seemed to engage him in a form of aerial combat, repeatedly flying directly toward his aircraft before quickly veering away.
At one point, he estimated the object passed within only a few hundred feet of his plane.
A 27-Minute Encounter
The aerial pursuit lasted roughly 27 minutes. During this time, Gorman attempted several high-speed maneuvers in an effort to intercept the object.
However, he reported that the light consistently outperformed his aircraft, which was one of the most capable fighters of the era.
Eventually, the mysterious light climbed rapidly and disappeared into the darkness.
Official Investigation
The incident was investigated by the U.S. Air Force, which had recently begun studying UFO sightings following the famous Kenneth Arnold UFO sighting and the Roswell incident.
After examining the case, Air Force investigators concluded that the object was likely a weather balloon illuminated by the setting sun.
However, this explanation has long been debated because many researchers argue that a weather balloon could not perform the high-speed maneuvers described by Gorman.
A Classic UFO Case
Today, the Gorman Dogfight remains one of the most famous early UFO encounters involving a trained military pilot.
Unlike many UFO sightings, the event included:
-
Multiple witnesses on the ground
-
A trained fighter pilot observer
-
Radar and flight data from nearby aircraft
Despite decades of investigation, the true identity of the mysterious light seen over Fargo that night remains uncertain.
