Cold War Document Mentions Mysterious Aerial Encounters in Brazil
Brazil — Late 1960s / Early 1970s
A declassified intelligence compilation known as CENDOC Envelope 2 (1971) contains several reports from the 1960s describing unusual aerial phenomena and alleged encounters with unidentified objects in Brazil. The documents were later made public through the efforts of the online archive The Black Vault, which publishes declassified government records.
The material includes witness statements, aviation reports, and testimonies collected by Brazilian authorities and military personnel.
Object Reportedly Followed Passenger Aircraft
One report describes an incident involving a Brazilian aircraft flying from São Paulo toward Londrina. According to the document, the plane was reportedly followed by a bright luminous object during part of the flight.
Crew members observed the object maintaining a constant distance from the aircraft. At times it appeared to move to the left side of the plane and then cross ahead of the aircraft’s nose.
The pilot reportedly contacted air traffic control near Londrina and requested that observers on the ground monitor the sky in the direction of the aircraft’s approach.
The document does not provide a final explanation for what the crew observed.
Strange Figures Reported Near Belo Horizonte
Another account in the file describes an unusual event near Belo Horizonte. A young witness claimed to have seen several figures near a landed craft.
According to the statement:
-
The beings wore green suits resembling diving outfits.
-
They were described as short in height.
-
Their heads appeared large and were reportedly covered by a dark visor or protective covering.
-
One witness believed they were holding an object resembling a weapon or instrument.
The craft itself was described as circular and metallic, estimated at around 20 meters in diameter.
The witness fled the area and later reported the encounter to authorities.
Additional Testimonies and Interviews
The documents also include transcripts of interviews with witnesses who claimed to have seen strange lights or objects over rural regions. In one conversation, a man identified only as Wilson described hearing a sound similar to a helicopter and observing a silent craft hovering near a hill.
He claimed the object remained in the area for a long period before eventually leaving.
Officials noted that other residents had reported similar sightings around the same time.
Intelligence Notes Remain Inconclusive
The reports collected in the file were primarily raw intelligence notes and witness statements. Analysts did not provide a confirmed explanation for the phenomena.
As with many Cold War–era UFO reports, the documents emphasize that the information was not fully evaluated and may contain unverified accounts.
Nevertheless, the records illustrate how unusual aerial sightings were taken seriously enough to be documented by authorities during the period.
